A 25-year-old Laveen man has been arrested as the wrong-way driver in a crash that killed three Grand Canyon University students on Oct. 10.

Vincent Ian Acosta has been booked into the Maricopa County Jail on three counts of second-degree murder along with 11 counts of endangerment and two counts of aggravated assault, the Arizona Department of Public Safety announced Monday.

The four-vehicle crash occurred just before 4 a.m. Oct. 10 on northbound Interstate 17 at Table Mesa Road.

The driver of a Toyota SUV traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-17 struck a Honda sedan, Nissan sedan and a commercial vehicle, DPS officials said.

Two passengers of the Honda sedan were declared deceased at the scene, and the driver of the car died from her injuries at a hospital.

The victims were Abriauna Brook Hoffman and Magdalyn Louise Ogden, 18-year-olds from Clarkston, Wash., and Hunter Elaine Kinohi Balberdi, 19, of Kula, Hawaii, officials said.

The drivers of the Nissan sedan and commercial vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries. They were the only ones in the vehicles.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was taken to a Phoenix area hospital with serious injuries.
