Three lifeguard certification classes will be offered in February and March: Feb. 29 to March 3, March 7 to 10 and March 18 to 21 (spring break).
Classes are blended courses, consisting of eight hours of online instruction to be completed prior to the first day of in-person work.
An online link will be emailed one week prior to the in-person session. In-person classes will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday; and spring break classes are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Enrollment is $50 for Surprise residents and $70 for non-residents.
Swim lesson instructor certification classes are March 14, 15 and 17. They run from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 8 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Class will not be held on Saturday March 16.
This is a blended course where online instruction needs to be completed in advance. A link will be emailed one week prior to the in-person session. Participants must be lifeguard certified or currently enrolled in a lifeguard certification class to enroll in the instructor class.
Enrollment is $50 for Surprise residents and $70 for non-residents.
All classes will be held at Surprise Aquatic Center, 15831 N. Bullard Ave.
Participants must be 15 years or older.
Registration is required. To sign up, go to surpriseaz.gov/SurpriseRec and click on “Aquatics.”
Participants who successfully complete courses will be certified by the Starfish Aquatics Institute. However, course completion does not guarantee employment with the city.
For information about certification courses or how to apply for a lifeguard or swim instructor position, contact the Parks and Recreation Office at 623-222-2000, or visit surpriseaz.gov/Aquatics.
