Surprise officials are looking for community feedback on the draft of the Surprise General Plan 2040, which is now available to view.
Comments on the guiding document for the city’s future are open through Wednesday, Aug. 30, at SurpriseGPupdate.com or by calling the Surprise Planning and Zoning Department at 623-222-3011.
Surprise’s General Plan 2040 is a state law-required update of the city’s General Plan 2035. This blueprint document will help guide decisions about land development, public safety, parks and recreation, economic development, environmental concerns and social issues.
The new draft plan captures a community desire toward building upon the city’s livability, ensuring Surprise reflects the vision of being inclusive to residents of all ages through balanced housing and economic opportunity, while also addressing water resource needs, transportation planning opportunities and establishment of a desert rural residential overlay.
This nearly two-year update process includes four phases and incorporates public input gathered through community workshops, committee and stakeholder discussions, surveys and other public engagement efforts. This input was used to shape the General Plan 2040 draft.
There will be a community workshop designed for discussion and input on the draft plan from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Surprise City Hall Community Room, 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza.
Following the draft review period, the city will enter the final phase of the General Plan update. This phase includes creating a final plan and providing it to city council to consider for adoption. Following council adoption, the General Plan will go to Surprise voters to ratify in the August 2024 election.
