The Rotary Club of Sun Lakes held its 10th Annual Rotary International Four-Way Test Speech competition the morning of April 2.
A student from each of Chandler Unified School District’s six high schools competed.
Leela Raj-Sankar, a Hamilton High School student, was declared the senior first-place winner by judges. The topic of her test was “ethical consumption.” She received $500 for placing first.
The purpose of each speech is to apply the principles of Rotary International’s Four-Way Test to a current ethical issue.
The test asks four questions: Is it the Truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Siyaa Poddar, an Arizona College Prep High School sophomore, placed second and received $250. Her topic was “Curiosity Killed the Cat.”
Runners-up, who each received $100, include Lucy Davis, a Casteel High School sophomore whose topic was “Eating Disorder/Culture;” Perry junior Charlotte Yeh (“Following the Crowd”); Chandler junior Ryu Long (“Think Before Speak”) and Basha junior Matthew Garza “Student Burnout.”
Judges at the event included Chandler Unified School District administrators Leo Schlueter, Dan Serrano and Dr. Craig Gilbert, CUSD Superintendent Frank Narducci and Rotary District Governor Kevin Pitts.
RCSL Rotarian Bill Schink served as contest scorekeeper.
