Car stolen from Tempe leads to officer-involved shooting in Mesa: police

Posted

An officer-involved shooting took place Friday morning in the 1500 block of East Mahoney in Mesa, police said.

No officers were injured, and the suspect was not “hit by any lethal rounds,” according to a Mesa Police Department release.

Just before 8:30 a.m. Feb. 16, Mesa police were notified that a stolen vehicle out of Tempe was traveling in Mesa. The vehicle had a GPS tracker, and it was parked at the East Mahoney address.

Two officers were in the area and saw a 25-year-old man leaving a home and walking up to the vehicle. The shooting involving two officers and the suspect occurred just after 8:40 a.m., police said.

“More officers were called to the area as the suspect was not following officers’ commands. A less lethal beanbag round and taser were used to help take the man into custody. A knife was located near the suspect,” the release stated.

The suspect was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and has been cleared by medical personnel to be booked into jail, police said.

“As the investigation progresses, both officers will be interviewed, an attempt to interview the suspect will be made, body-worn camera will be reviewed and attempts to locate witnesses will be conducted,” police said in the release.
