SRP, Plus Power pick Gilbert for new battery storage system

Posted

Gilbert will be home to a new battery storage system that Salt River Project will tap into during peak demand periods.

Tempe-based SRP announced  it has signed contracts with Plus Power to bring online two-grid charged battery storage systems – one in Gilbert, which will be called Superstition, and the other in Avondale, dubbed Sierra Estrella.

The total capacity of the systems will generate enough power to handle 76,000 homes for four hours, according to SRP.

“These early deployments will help both SRP and the industry gain experience with this technology, which will play a major role in reducing carbon emissions,” Kelly Barr, SRP’s chief strategy executive, said.

Both battery systems will use Tesla lithium-ion technology, and Plus Power will design and build the projects “to updated national codes and standards for battery energy storage systems, which incorporate lessons learned from incidents at other battery facilities,” officials said in an SRP release.

Plus Power will work with the Gilbert and Avondale fire departments to prepare an emergency response plan “and to ensure that local first responders are directly engaged throughout project design, construction, operation and training,” the release stated.

“We are thrilled to partner with SRP on the Sierra Estrella and Superstition battery energy storage systems projects, which will greatly enhance local grid reliability and provide a variety of tax and jobs benefits to the nearby communities,” said Molly Emerson, director of project development at Plus Power.

Sierra Estrella will be a 250-MW, four-hour battery storage system, and Superstition will be a 90-MW, four-hour battery storage system.
