The Scottsdale Police Department announced the promotion of Lieutenant Tom Myers to the rank of commander. The effective date of his promotion was Jan. 2, 2022.

Commander Myers and several other employees were celebrated and recognized for their promotions during a promotion ceremony on May 3. The ceremony had been on hold for pandemic protocols, which have recently been lifted.

Myers holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and a bachelor’s degree in business management from Northern Arizona University. He joined the Scottsdale Police Department in March of 2001 and served as a patrol officer, field training officer, defensive tactics instructor, investigative support officer and firearms instructor.

He became a crisis/hostage negotiator with the SWAT Team in 2004; and in 2005, he was selected as a SWAT Operator where he also served as a SWAT training officer.

In 2005, Myers was selected as a high enforcement arrest team detective (now SCU).  Throughout his career, he served as an explosive breacher and an instructor in hostage rescue tactics/CQB, force-on-force, building clearing and dignitary protection among many other subjects

Myers was promoted to the rank of sergeant in June 2008. As a sergeant, he worked as a supervisor in patrol, a sergeant field trainer and a SWAT team leader.  In 2010, he became the gang ROP supervisor where he was assigned to the crimes against persons section and joined a multi-disciplinary team of supervisors that oversaw detectives and investigations in all person crimes-related disciplines.

He was selected as the special assignments unit supervisor in 2012, during which time he supervised the department’s SWAT and violent felon apprehension operations. While at the rank of sergeant, Myers managed numerous programs including the department’s cultural diversity education program.

In 2014, Myers was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He served as a patrol watch commander and executive officer in the Via Linda District. He was also selected to serve as the alternate SWAT commander that year and he was also selected to command the department’s mobile field force and rapid response teams.

Myers was assigned to command the special investigations dection in 2016 and led the criminal intelligence unit, the Drug Enforcement Administration federal task force, the drug enforcement unit, and the Homeland Security unit.

During his time as a Lieutenant, Myers managed numerous department programs including the Crisis Intervention Stress Management Program for Employees, the 360 Wellness Program, the Dignitary Protection Program, and the Asset Forfeiture Program.

In 2018, Myers also served on the Phoenix regional committee for authoring combined complex terrorist attack protocols and rescue task force protocols for all police and fire agencies in the region.

As Commander, Myers will oversee the Via Linda District and be responsible for the day-to-day police operations of roughly 30-square-miles at the center of Scottsdale while supervising and leading approximately 100 professional staff and sworn police employees.
