Public art plans for off-leash dog park to be discussed Monday

Posted

Considerations for public art at a 2.6-acre off-leash dog park planned at the Pinal County complex at 575 N. Idaho Road are to be discussed at the April 12 meeting of the Apache Junction Public Art Commission.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the City Council Chambers, 300 E. Superstition Blvd.

Public art is identified as original work produced by an artist in an area easily accessible and clearly visible to the general public and allowing for unrestricted viewing from a variety of vantage points. Public art may possess functional as well as aesthetic qualities, according to the city’s website.

Art options for the dog park include:

  • Memorial dog tag wind chimes: Sell individual metal/brass dog tags that will be secured in a wind chime fashion.
  • Love tags: Dog tags secured to a designated section of the fencing, similar to the “love locks” on a bridge in Paris.
  • Canine iron art: One artist selected to create iron art versions of various canines/dogs
  • Painted canines/fire hydrants: Various artists to each propose a concept for one of several dog exhibits or fire hydrant exhibits.

In other business April 12, the commission is to:

  • discuss a work plan.
  • elect a vice chair
  • discuss the proposed scope of services with Art Space 6 LLC to perform tasks associated with the commission’s work plan.
  • discuss holding a public art commission planning workshop 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 8, in the Parks and Recreation Conference
Center, 1001 N. Idaho Road in Apache Junction.

The commission is to next hold a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. May 10 in the City Council Chambers, 300 E. Superstition Blvd.
