Police: Student brought gun onto Maryvale High School Campus
Posted
Independent Newsmedia
A high school student was detained by Phoenix Police after allegedly bringing a handgun onto the Maryvale High School Campus.
However, police said despite reports of shooting at the campus there were no shots fired.
“Officers detained the student after a short foot chase and confirmed the presence of a handgun,” said Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower said in an email. “While officers were detaining the student with a gun, several 911 calls came in mentioning a subject at the school actively shooting. This was confirmed not to be the case as several additional officers responded to secure the school,” he said.
The age and the gender of the student and how officials saw the gun was not released.
“The juvenile student will be arrested and processed into Maricopa County Juvenile Center for charges,” Bower said. “Because he is underage, I will not be providing his (date of birth) or any further personal information. Your questions about why he brought a gun to school are part of an active and ongoing investigation,” he told the Daily Independent.
A phone call to Phoenix Union High School District officials was not returned as of 2 p.m. on Thursday.
