Police arrest suspect linked to neighborhood shooting in Scottsdale

Scottsdale Police have announced the arrest of 55-year-old Patrick Gruchala as the suspected shooter in an incident that left another man critically injured on Saturday, Feb. 18.

The unintended victim was reportedly shot while seated in a parked vehicle in a neighborhood northeast of Alma School and Happy Valley roads.

The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and remains in critical condition in the ICU at a local hospital, according to police.

Scottsdale Police detectives responded to the initial shooting scene and began collecting information and evidence, including video surveillance, which led them to Gruchala being the suspect, police say.

Detectives conducting surveillance on Gruchala reportedly observed him hide a weapon of the same caliber used in the shooting in a desert wash at a separate residence he was staying at.

On the evening of Feb. 19, Gruchala was arrested at a Scottsdale residence by the Special Assignment Unit, police say. During a search warrant, evidence was recovered including clothing matching what was seen in the surveillance footage and a note with the crime scene address.

Police say the investigation points to Gruchala intending to target one of the homeowners at the incident location, but he actually shot an innocent person who had shown up for an appointment at the house.

Gruchala was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail on one count of attempted first degree murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
