Plencner: Some thoughts on next year’s elections

Posted

“Why have you not written any letters to the editor recently,” a friend asked. “Well, apparently we have fixed everything,” I jokingly replied. If only that were true. So, this one's for Russ.

As we approach the 2024 national election, along with some state and local races, here's what I hope: Those who have held office for multiple terms, please give serious consideration to stepping down and as our forefathers planned, go back to your farms, stores and offices.

To those who will be newly elected, commit to really making a difference. Forget the “high” of being in a seat of power and put a real premium on actually engaging in public service.

Voters, forces have splintered and divided us, driving the hate factor to all-time highs. When you cast your vote, consider this; the primary is where you elect your heart’s desire, the general is where you vote to save the country. This statement is mostly directed to my fellow Republicans. Stop destroying each other.

Democrats need no urging to stay together. They operate as a herd, remaining close to each other and rarely breaking ranks. Independents have no clear philosophy; they need to stop judging candidates based on their personalities. Take a hard look at the actions and policies wrought by the two major parties and vote accordingly. There is no Independent Party in Washington. Senator Kyrsten Sinema says she is an Independent but caucuses with the Democrats and votes with Biden. Bottom Line: Vote every office, leave no box unchecked.
