‘The Weight of a Feather’ celebrates critical work of Liberty Wildlife

Liberty Wildlife’s documentary “The Weight of a Feather” won four Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards, including best Science/Environmental Program, Writing, Editing, and Graphic Arts.

The film explores how wildlife connects people, nature, and cultures and was made possible by the Rob & Melani Walton Foundation with additional support from Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. The documentary highlights the Liberty Wildlife Non-Eagle Feather Repository, which provides feathers for Native Americans for religious and ceremonial purposes.

The mission of Liberty Wildlife, which is located at 2600 E. Elwood St., in Phoenix, is to nurture the nature of Arizona through quality wildlife rehabilitation, natural history education and conservation services to the community. Also, the Liberty Wildlife Non-Eagle Feather Repository program provides feathers to Native Americans in support of their cultures.

Narrated by the actor Peter Coyote, “The Weight of a Feather,” celebrates the work of Liberty Wildlife through stories about the preservation of wildlife and nature in partnership with Arizona Game and Fish Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, SRP, APS, The Peregrine Fund, and Verde Canyon Railroad. The documentary features Tony Duncan, world champion hoop dancer, Robert Mesta, and Allen King.

It was filmed on location in Arizona with a focus on the urban wildlife around Tempe Town Lake and The Rio Salado.

Executive producers Melani and Rob Walton recognized the impact of Liberty Wildlife and the role the Liberty Wildlife Non-Eagle Feather Repository plays in preserving Native American cultural identity.

“‘The Weight of a Feather’ is the story of how nature, people, and culture are linked, and we hope that this inspires viewers to reflect on their own connection to the environment and how they can protect the planet,” they shared in a press release.

“The Weight of a Feather” is written and directed by Arizona Governor’s Arts Award recipient Kristin Atwell Ford and produced by the Emmy-winning team at Quantum Leap Productions, including cinematography by Bill Davis, and editing/graphics by Misty Wilson. The film is streaming nationally on Amazon Prime Video and PBS Passport, and will soon be available in public libraries across the country on Kanopy.
