A 27-year-old Phoenix man has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after pleading guilty to possession of a machine gun.
Carlos Negrete Farias was sentenced this month to 37 months followed by three years of supervised release.
On Jan. 31, 2022, Farias agreed to provide an undercover agent a “fun AR” and $3,000 in exchange for a .50-caliber rifle. Subsequently, Farias sent the agent a video of a person shooting an automatic AR-15-style rifle, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Farias was arrested on Feb. 8, 2022, during an exchange with undercover agent.
“At the time of his arrest, Farias was found with a machine gun conversion device in his pocket, knowing that it was a part designed and intended for use in converting a semi-automatic weapon into a machine gun,” the release stated.
The case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, “a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone,” according to the release.
