Fire officials haven’t formally announced the cause of a Phoenix propane fire Thursday where more than 100 firefighters responded near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
About 5 p.m., crews responded to a scene where propane tanks were exploding more than “500 yards in all directions,” Phoenix Fire Capt. Scott Douglas stated in a press release.
The incident happened at Bill’s Propane Service, 109 N. 40th St., Phoenix.
On Friday, crews were still on scene trying to determine the cause of the fire, said Kim Ragsdale, a public information officer for the Phoenix Fire Department.
No one was injured. People in the immediate area were evacuated.
“We aren’t exactly sure what caused it,” Ragsdale said.
But fire officials recommend propane tanks be stored in “safe, well-ventilated areas” in the shade, she said.
At the time of the fire, the temperature was 117 degrees at Sky Harbor, according to the National Weather Service in Phoenix.
The tanks were rated to withstand 120-degree temperatures, Ragsdale said.
It is not known whether the propane business could be fined as a result of the incident, Ragsdale said.
Some vehicles were damaged in the incident. An exact number is not known.
