One of the most vital voices in American roots music, Martha Redbone, returns to the MIM Music Theater

Influential singer-songwriter, Martha Redbone, will explore the music of Appalachia as she returns to the MIM Music Theater. Her performance comes after the release of her latest roots album, The Garden of Love: Songs of William Blake. It is a collection of eighteenth-century poems set to the music of Appalachia. It was produced by John McEuen, founder of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The album interwinds elements of folk, gospel, stomp chants, and soul music.
Embracing her Choctaw and Cherokee heritage, Martha Redbone has long been a champion of Native American culture. She gives frequent talks on Indigenous rights and holds an annual music workshop with the United Houma Nation’s Cultural Enrichment Summer Camp. Her album Skintalk is part of the permanent collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) as an example of contemporary Native American music. She was also featured in NMAI’s exhibit “Up Where We Belong- Native Americans in Popular Culture”.

Since breaking onto the scene at the 2002 Native American Music Awards, Martha Redbone has earned a solid reputation as a sought-after collaborator, performer, educator, and mentor all across North America and abroad. Over the year's she has proudly retraced the path of her unique mixed American heritage back to its earliest source. While Americana and roots music is her natural homecoming, Redbone is an artist who has never been chained by borders. In 2009 she received the opportunity of a lifetime, performing at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian's Native Nations Ball to celebrate the first inauguration of President Barack Obama.
