Describe your focus as Congregation Or Tzion education director:

My primary focus as education director is to provide spaces in our congregation where Jewish exploration is encouraged for all ages. I want to build a religious school where families build a long-lasting sense of Jewish pride and purpose. For adults, Jewish learning and growth should be constant and involve exploring both classical texts and Jewish viewpoints on contemporary issues.

What are a couple important issues facing the Valley’s Jewish community today?

I believe that the Valley’s Jewish community is challenged with creating a sense of communal cohesion while acknowledging our geographical separation. What are some easy points of unification? With our geographical spread, how do we find allow each distinct Valley Jewish community to connect locally?

I feel that the Jewish community must continue to build a connection to the state of Israel, while having honest discussions about Israel’s challenges. It is one of the guiding principles of the Center for Jewish Philanthropy of Greater Phoenix and among the reasons I am proud to serve on its board of directors. We can build a strong Jewish community here in the Valley, while supporting the state of Israel.

According to an ASU 2020 study, the Jewish population in Maricopa County has grown by 19% since 2002. What are some important missions of the CJP?

The Center for Jewish Philanthropy (CJP) is embarking on a mission to assist our community partners in building capacity to meet the rapid communal growth. CJP is providing easy outreach opportunities through JewishPhoenix.com, so that newcomers and longtime residents can easily connect to the wonderful organizations and congregations.

The CJP is dedicated to serving the Greater Jewish community throughout the Valley. By bringing us together, we can celebrate, reimagine, and cultivate a stronger and more diverse Jewish community through Jewish philanthropy and dedication to service.

How have you seen Glendale grow and evolve since relocating here 12 years ago from Toronto?

The city of Glendale, along with other West Valley communities, has consistently been some of the fastest-growing communities in the nation. Glendale has added several new housing developments along with growth in commercial and manufacturing areas. Entertainment districts have flourished especially when you host events like the Super Bowl. I love the Arrowhead district and the beautiful neighborhoods.

Along with population growth, Glendale has seen a growth in the desire for people to connect to spiritual communities, as well. I want to assist in any way I can to help people, and especially the Jewish residents of Glendale, find their spiritual home, their spiritual connection.
