Two 17-year-olds were taken into custody Thursday after a chase that ended in an officer-involved shooting, police said.
Mesa officers found a stolen vehicle traveling south on Power Road at about 4:45 p.m. June 12 and followed it east on Broadway Road to northbound on 72nd Place.
An officer deployed a grappler in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but it failed, and the vehicle continued into a cul-de-sac, police said.
“The stolen vehicle made a U-turn by driving off road and through the front yard of several houses, putting it head-on with responding officers’ vehicles. The stolen vehicle rammed the side of an officer’s vehicle, and this is when the officer-involved shooting occurred,” a Mesa Police Department release stated.
The driver has a “significant injury to his hand,” police said. It was unknown Thursday night whether the injury was caused by gunfire or the collision.
The two officers involved were not injured, and neither was the passenger, police said.
The Tempe Police Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting under the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
Police said the vehicle involved was stolen June 5 in Mesa.
