Mesa officer, wife sue former therapist for initiating intimate relationship

A pair of lawsuits filed in June in Maricopa County Superior Court allege a then-therapist assigned to help a Mesa Police officer through post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms initiated a sexual relationship with the officer and tried to break up his marriage.

Jennifer Cooper surrendered her professional counseling license in July 2025 to the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners after an investigation into a complaint about Cooper. The board referred the case to law enforcement, and while it appears no criminal charges have been filed, Cooper and the agency that employed her are being sued by officer Brian Jutting and his wife, Kathryn Whalen.

One suit names Cooper, her husband, Cooper’s LLC, the city of Mesa and the agencies associated with Cooper being assigned to help Jutting as co-defendants. The other suit names Ajasha Long, Ph.D., a psychologist, and her husband, and those same agencies.
