Mesa domestic violence call escalates to officer-involved shooting

Posted

A 39-year-old man barricaded himself in a home Monday following a domestic violence incident and fired shots before being arrested, Mesa police said.

No one was injured during the encounter that took place about 11 a.m. Feb. 3 near 400 South 32nd Street. The suspect was not identified in a Mesa Police Department release.

Police received a call about 9:20 a.m. When officers arrived, they learned about a domestic violence situation that began the night before.

Officers were told the man was acting erratically and was possibly intoxicated, the release stated. They also learned the suspect had threatened to harm himself and may have fired a round inside the home.

After ensuring no one else was inside the home, officers began communicating with the man who, at one point, appeared near a doorway “and heard what they believed to be gunshots coming from the apartment and this is when the officer-involved shooting occurred. Officers deployed less lethal measures to take the suspect into custody,” the release stated.

Tempe Police Department is the lead investigating agency in the officer-involved shooting.
