Man dies in hospital after Phoenix police arrest

Phoenix police are investigating the death of a man who died during surgery after being arrested.

Turrell Dantae Clay, 33, was arrested Jan. 10 for an outstanding felony warrant near 3100 North 40th Lane, according to a Jan. 15 release from the Phoenix Police Department. Prior to the arrest, police said he ran from officers while armed with a gun and climbed on the roof of a home.

“Officers used less lethal tools when Clay would not get down from the roof. Once Clay was off the roof, officers used physical force during a struggle to get him handcuffed,” the release stated.

Once in custody, paramedics evaluated Clay and released him to officers before leaving the scene, police said. While still at the scene, Clay told officers he was having difficulty breathing. They drove him to a hospital after which he was taken by ambulance to a cardiac hospital for advanced care.

During surgery, Clay died, police said.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine cause of death.
