Police identify man who died in Gilbert house fire

The man who died Saturday afternoon in a house fire near Val Vista Drive and Ray Road in Gilbert has been identified as Robert Sharbaugh, 32.

Gilbert police identified the victim Tuesday, Aug. 18, and said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Gilbert police received a call about 1:40 p.m. Saturday, April 15, and were told when they arrived at the home that a man was inside.

An officer attempted to enter the home, police said, but was overcome by smoke and forced to leave the house.

Gilbert Fire & Rescue arrived and put out the fire. A short time later, police said, the man was found inside.
