CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Sam Lewis and Chance Mallory each scored 20 points as No. 9 Virginia shrugged off a sluggish start and pulled away for a 97-72 win over Northeastern on Friday night.

Thijs De Ridder had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Johann Grunloh, playing on an injured right ankle, added 13 points for the Cavaliers.

Rashad King scored 26 points and guard Louis Bond added 21 for the Huskies, who committed 19 turnovers.

With a matchup against No. 12 Arkansas on tap Sunday, Virginia (2-0) got off to a dreadful start, going 2 for 10 from the field, including 0 for 7 from 3-point range, and committing four turnovers in the first eight minutes.

Virginia didn’t take its first lead until Mallory made a layup with 8:23 left in the half. The Cavaliers outscored the Huskies 22-11 over the final nine minutes of the half to take a 38-31 lead to the locker room. The two teams combined for 18 first-half turnovers, 11 by Northeastern.

But a dominant showing in the second half allowed Virginia to rest its starters for the final six minutes. That figures to be important, considering the Cavaliers are getting the bulk of their scoring from the four key players they retained from last year’s 30-win squad.

NO. 4 UCONN 85, NO. 16 MICHIGAN 77

BOSTON )AP) — Braylon Mullins scored 23 points and connected on 10 of 11 free throws to help UConn beat Michigan in a rematch of last season’s NCAA championship game.

Silas Demary Jr. finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. Colben Landrew added 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Huskies (2-0) at TD Garden, home to the Boston Celtics.

Michigan (1-1) got within single digits in the final minute, but the Huskies closed it out at the foul line.

In last season’s title game, the Wolverines held off UConn 69-63 despite making only two 3-pointers.

This time, Michigan again struggled from beyond the arc, going 7 of 28. But the Wolverines couldn’t keep up with a Huskies team that led by 18 in the first half. UConn connected on nine 3s and shot 42% from the field overall, compared to 41% by Michigan.

NO. 14 MIAMI 83, WAGNER 57

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Shelton Henderson scored 19 points and Miami rebounded from a season-opening loss against top-ranked Florida to beat Wagner.

Malik Reneau finished with 12 points and Caleb Gaskins added 11 for the Hurricanes (1-1), who outscored Wagner 24-3 in fast-break points and had 18 assists. Miami made 16 of 18 free throws and had a 52-22 advantage in the paint.

Reneau averaged a team-leading 18 points last season while Henderson scored 13 per game but both struggled in the opener Monday against Florida, finishing with five and seven, respectively.

After a second-chance layup by Tajae Jones gave the Seahawks their only lead at 10-8 in the opening four minutes, the Hurricanes responded with a 22-4 run.

Gaskins, Brent Bland and Nick Dorn hit 3-pointers to key the surge. Dante Allen’s layup with 4:35 capped the spurt and put Miami ahead 30-14.

NO. 17 KANSAS 89, MIDDLE TENNESSEE 45

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 17 points in 18 minutes and led Kansas to a rout of Middle Tennessee.

Kaufman-Renn, a fifth-year senior who transferred from Purdue, shot 7 for 8 from the field and grabbed four rebounds. Through two games with Kansas (2-0), he is 11 for 13 from the field.

His efficiency helped pace the Jayhawks, who shot a blistering 63% in the game while holding Middle Tennessee to just 25%.

Fifth-year center Christian Reeves added 10 points for Kansas.

The Jayhawks were particularly effective in the paint, using their size to outscore the Blue Raiders 48-16. They also pulled down 32 defensive rebounds to limit second chances.

The Kansas bench chipped in 46 points to help keep Middle Tennessee at bay and build the lead to as many as 50 points in the second half.

NO. 18 IOWA ST. 83, SOUTHERN MISS. 57

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Tre Singleton scored 19 of his career-high 28 points in the first half to lead Iowa State past Southern Mississippi.

The Cyclones (1-1), who lost their opener to Memphis on a neutral court Monday, have won nine straight home openers and 25 of their last 26.

Iowa State dominated inside in the first half, outscoring the Golden Eagles 26-6 in the paint while jumping out to a 46-29 halftime lead.

The Cyclones took a double-digit lead late in the first half on Dominykas Pleta’s fast-break dunk, and they were up by 29 in the middle of the first half.

Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger played nine players, and all of them got at least 10 minutes and scored. The Cyclones finished with a 42-20 advantage in the paint and converted Southern Miss’ 18 turnovers into 23 points.

Singleton, who transferred from Northwestern, shot 7 of 9 from the field in the first half and 10 of 17 for the game. He also had a team-high nine rebounds.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Amari Allen had 16 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists for the fifth triple-double in program history as Alabama beat Arkansas State.

Allen got his 10th assist on Brandon Garrison’s layup with just over six minutes left. Before the final media timeout, Allen landed awkwardly, grabbed his right ankle and needed help off the floor. He returned to the bench after the timeout. Arkansas State’s Amadou Doumbia went straight to the locker room after he was also slow to get up.

Alabama guard Aden Holloway served the final game of a five-game suspension following his March arrest on drug charges that were later dismissed. Freshman forward Jaxon Richardson sat out with an upper-body injury.

Layne Taylor made his first three 3-point shots to help Arkansas State (1-1) take a 19-11 lead. He finished with 20 points and six assists. Chaz Watson added 15 points and Doumbia had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

NO. 23 KENTUCKY 89, JAMES MADISON 80

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins each scored 16 points to lead Kentucky to a win over James Madison.

The Wildcats (2-0) overcame 18 lead changes and five ties before pulling way with a 15-3 run that turned a 56-54 deficit into a 69-59 lead with 10 minutes remaining.

Former James Madison forward Justin McBride added 13 points, Mason Williams had 12 and Brayden Hawthorne 10 for Kentucky. Milan Momcilovic (24 points per game) scored just seven points.
