Keeley: Sidewalk work really not necessary in Sun City

Posted

I have walked throughout Sun City since 1992 and I have not seen one blind person walking through our neighborhoods.

Now and then I’ll visit someone in a wheelchair, but have never seen two on the same day. So why the need for a passing lane in the middle of the sidewalk; and if this is truly a necessity why not put a passing lane on every sidewalk and not just a few? It make no sense.

A few years ago the county ground down the “square” corners to smooth the corner to allow wheelchairs easy access to cross the street. One would think that one cement pad could be replaced with one that included bumps to alert wheelchairs and blind people to the crossing. Instead we are replacing entire corners with “square” corners and one pad in the middle with warning bumps. Does anyone have an answer to why?

While I’m at it, the Sun City Independent used to deliver the monthly Recreation Centers of Sun City SunViews on the first Tuesday of each month. Now older members must go to a recreation center to pick up a copy of the SunViews. This is a disservice to a large segment of our community as some are unable to get to a rec center anymore or they forget to pick one up.

Just because we are older does not mean we don’t care about our community. Indeed, we care very much what goes on and to the future of Sun City. Please include the SunViews in the Sun City Independent once more.
