The aftermath of a massive blaze at a plastic recycling yard on Saturday is keeping Glendale firefighters busy as flare-ups continue to occur beneath debris piles.
The Glendale Fire Department said in a release Monday night that recycling yard fires “are notoriously difficult to extinguish completely, especially when they involve plastics and oils that can smolder and ignite under certain conditions.”
The fire at 62nd and Myrtle avenues began about 6 p.m. Aug. 12 and involved plastics and vegetable oil that officials said burned intensely and created a large smoke plume.
It was contained after six hours and has been monitored since. Flare-ups have been put out quickly with firefighters using aerial ladders, according to authorities.
“The hot and windy weather in the summer months also contributes to the risk of re-ignition. We are following all the best practices and procedures to mitigate this risk and ensure the safety of the public and our firefighters,” the release stated.
Authorities ask people in the area to call 911 if they see smoke at the location.
The department also is working to clear the streets of runoff, “which is a challenge when the fire continues to rekindle, requiring large volumes of water to properly extinguish,” officials said.
