Head-on crash in Mesa kills man, injures children

Posted

A 47-year-old man died in a head-on collision Friday afternoon at Sossaman Road and Superstition Springs Boulevard, Mesa police said.

The victim was driving a Prius that crashed into a Ford truck. The driver of the truck had serious injuries and two of the three children, who were in car seats, also were injured – one seriously, police said. The children in the truck ranged in age from 2 months to 5 years.

The crash occurred about 4 p.m. July 14, and officers arrived to find the truck flipped on its side. Both vehicles had extensive damage.

The Prius driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver and the children were taken to hospitals.

Police said a preliminary investigation shows the truck was traveling southbound on Sossaman approaching Superstition Springs Boulevard “at a high rate of speed.

“The truck attempts to pass a vehicle in front of it by going left of center into the two-way left turn lane. The Prius was traveling northbound on Sossaman and had moved into the left-hand turn lane to travel westbound on Superstition Springs Boulevard.

"It appears that both drivers then attempted to avoid each other by making evasive moves, but they collided head-on,” police said in a release.

The driver of the truck is being investigated for impaired driving, which is standard on all accidents resulting in death, police said, adding detectives are working the case to determine if any charges are warranted.
