Harriet Vos

SUN CITY WEST - Harriet Vos died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015. She was born in McCook, Nebraska in 1936 to Donald Meyers and Harriet Davis and had a sister, Mary, 7 years younger. She spent most of her youth in Omaha, where she graduated from Central High in 1954. She attended the University of Omaha, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. In 1956 she was offered a full scholarship to the University of Oregon where she met her future husband, Pieter Vos, a Fulbright scholar from Holland. They married in 1957 and moved to Glendale where she worked as Pieter studied international management at Thunderbird. Upon graduation, the couple accepted their first overseas assignment, which during the next 35 years, saw them living and working all over the world from Cuba, Guatemala, Belgium, Thailand, Germany, Hong Kong, Holland, and even a few places in the US. She learned several languages including Spanish, Dutch, French, German and even some Thai! Harriet was diagnosed with MS in 1983 and was involved in several MS groups over the years. They moved back to the US in 1990 and retired in Arizona. They continued to travel around the world and supported a Guatemala literacy project through Rotary. Harriet was active in the Silver & Lapidary Club and made beautiful pieces of dichroic & silver jewelry. She also enjoyed her 60 year involvement (as a 3rd generation) in PEO. She was a member of Desert Garden UCC Church and the Handicapables Club for many years. Harriet was known for her big smile and positive attitude with her life. She is survived by her husband Pieter; daughter. Sue (Dave) in Panama; her grandchildren. Sean & Kristi in Florida; and her son. John who has been her caregiver for the past year. Harriet was in Hospice care and died at home in Sun City West. Services will be held at a later date.
