Two men have been sentenced to spend years in prison for a May 2023 shooting during which a stray bullet struck a 6-month-old girl in the head and injured a man who was shot 17 times, authorities announced Tuesday.
Miguel Ceja, 21, and Zackary Carrillo, 20, were sentenced to 21 and 10.5 years respectively after pleading guilty to attempted second-degree murder charges, according to a release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
The man who was injured was waiting for a bus after work near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road when Ceja and Carrillo approached him.
“After the victim looked up from his phone and made eye contact, Ceja pulled up his shirt to flash a gun in his waistband and asked the victim if he was ready to die,” the release stated.
“Fearing he would be robbed, the victim started heading to a nearby gas station. As he tried to walk away, he felt the first bullets strike his body. He pulled out his own gun and fired back.”
More than two dozen shots were exchanged between the two defendants and the victim. A stray bullet went into a car stopped at a red light and hit the baby in the head. The bullet that hit the girl was traced back to Ceja’s gun, authorities said.
The girl suffered a fractured skull, and the man suffered numerous injuries. Both victims survived.
“It’s miraculous that two innocent people, including a baby caught in the crossfire, didn’t lose their lives that day,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Michell said.
“These criminals showed a blatant indifference for life all because of a perceived wrong look. Anyone who carries out this type of senseless violence in Maricopa County will be held accountable.”
