Grand jury indicts suspect in Phoenix police officer assault

A 29-year-old man faces eight felony counts in connection with an April assault on a Phoenix police officer, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.

The counts against Rudy Gomez include three of aggravated assault, four counts of endangerment and one count of assault.

The charges stem from an April 30 incident when Phoenix police officer George Manciu was assaulted after he responded to a domestic violence call in Central Phoenix, according to the county. The assault was captured on body-worn camera.

“As a community, we should be deeply concerned by the increase in violence directed at our men and women in law enforcement,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said.

“Next week marks the start of National Police Week. It is the ideal time to acknowledge those who put their lives in danger to protect us, and to thank them for their courageous service. Every week should be Police Week.”
