A 31-year-old man has been indicted for stalking and attempting to kidnap his former girlfriend in Glendale, authorities said Wednesday.

Zakary Preece was indicted for attempt to commit kidnapping, stalking, unlawful discharge of a firearm and interfering with judicial proceedings, according to a release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

On Oct. 25, a Utah police department alerted the Glendale Police Department that Preece had removed his ankle monitor and was on his way to Arizona looking for his former girlfriend. Preece was about to face trial in Utah for multiple domestic violence-related charges.

Days later, Preece was seen near the victim’s home in Glendale, authorities said.

“Preece was in his vehicle and as officers attempted to take him into custody, he tried to take his own life. Preece sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound but survived and was arrested at the scene. A search of his vehicle uncovered a firearm, tracking devices and items indicative of stalking,” an MCAO release stated.

Further investigation led to the discovery of a rental home in Glendale tied to Preece, where police recovered additional weapons, restraints and surveillance equipment, according to MCAO.

Preece will remain in custody until trial.
