Posted

New transit passes will be available for children and teens in Tempe and Guadalupe beginning May 15, allowing those 6-18 to ride all Valley Metro bus routes and light rail for free.

Passes for the Tempe program will be available from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. weekdays beginning Monday, May 15, at the Tempe Transit Store, 200 E. Fifth St. Public parking is located at 117 E. Fifth St., according to a release.

In addition, passes will be available from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, June 24.

Students attending Tempe, Marocs de Niza or McClintock high schools and who live in Tempe or Guadalupe can obtain passes at the schools. A parent does not need to be present nor is proof of residency or a birth certificate required. The school registrar will verify all the information, city officials said.

Requirements for people 17 and younger:

1) A parent or guardian and the child must all be present when registering for the program at the transit store.

2) A paper copy of the most recent utility bill (dated within the last 60 days) with a Tempe address. Acceptable utility bills include SRP, APS, Southwest Gas, City of Tempe, Cox Communications, Century Link, Direct TV, Dish Network, cell phone company, bank statement or a current statement from the Department of Economic Security. Lease agreements are not acceptable forms of proof of residency. The bill must have the parent’s or guardian's name on it.

3) Youth’s birth certificate. (The accompanying parent must be listed as the parent on the birth certificate.)

4) A valid driver’s license/photo ID of parent/guardian.

5) Step-parents or legal guardians must bring a copy of the marriage license or state guardianship papers. Notarized guardianship papers are not acceptable proof of guardianship.

Requirements for people age 18:

1) A valid driver’s license, ID pass or U.S. passport.

2) A paper copy of the most recent utility bill (dated within the last 60 days) with a Tempe address. (See additional details above)

3) An 18-year-old who lives at home with a parent or guardian may use the parent or guardian's utility bill as proof of address if they bring a birth certificate and the parent or guardian with them to get the pass.
