El Grito to commemorate Mexican Independence Day with Phoenix fiesta

2nd annual celebration coming to downtown

Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off with a huge celebration in downtown Phoenix.

El Grito, marking Mexican Independence Day, goes from 4 to 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Adams Street.

Music headliners include El Dasa, and La Brazza Nortena. Local musical acts scheduled to appear are Banda La Guamuchil, El Domador, and Banda La Experta.

Hispanic Heritage Month goes from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

“It is significant to acknowledge and commemorate our origins and heritage, as well as share our diverse cultural background with others,” Phoenix City Councilwoman Betty Guardado of District 5 shared in a press release. “By choosing Phoenix as the event's location, a larger number of community members have the opportunity to participate in the festivities and gain knowledge about the culture.”

El Grito festivalgoers can immerse themselves in the culture, cuisine and entertainment that Mexico has to offer.

Much like America's 4th of July, Mexican Independence Day is an occasion commemorating the battle for independence in 1810. El Grito pays homage to the historic moment.

Live entertainment includes mariachi music and performances of Ballet Folkloric. Also, look for displays of Lucha Libre, the Mexican-style wrestling that combines athleticism and entertainment.

Greenlight Communities contributed $10,000 to the festival. The Greenlight Gives program provides financial support to a range of community organizations to enhance residents’ lives.

Festival admission is free.
