Driver using TikTok app during crash that killed 5 along I-10 in Chandler: DPS

A 36-year-old man has been charged with five counts of manslaughter in a January crash on eastbound Interstate 10 near Chandler Boulevard, authorities said.

Danny G. Tiner was traveling 68 mph in the posted 55-mph construction zone and “was actively using the TikTok application on his cell phone at the time of the collision,” Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said in a release.

The crash happened about 6:15 a.m. Jan. 12. At the time of the collision, Interstate 10 was closed at Wild Horse Pass Boulevard due to an earlier crash, officials said.

Tiner said he received a message on his electronic work tablet and acknowledged the message prior to the crash, according to the DPS release.

“Tiner said when he looked back up traffic was stopped, and he could not stop his vehicle in time to avoid a collision,” the release stated.

Five people died.

Troopers suspected driver distraction as a possible factor. Tiner was told about an investigation and turned his cell phone over to law enforcement, DPS officials said.

Investigators conducted a forensic examination of Tiner’s cell phone with assistance from the FBI.

The investigation revealed Tiner’s speed and that he was using the TikTok application on his phone, according to DPS.

AZDPS troopers and detectives arrested Tiner at his home on Thursday, June 29.

In addition to the manslaughter charges, he faces four counts of endangerment and one count of tampering with physical evidence.
