Deadline nears for Tempe park ranger survey

Posted

Tempe residents have until midnight Monday to tell officials how the new park ranger program should be developed to reflect the city's neighborhoods.

The city has decided to move forward with plans to hire full-time employee as park rangers. They will not carry firearms but will have the ability to issue city citations.

Mainly, though, the park rangers will provide resources and information, as well as education about park rules.

“These full-time city employees will be the community’s connection to our parks, preserves and green spaces,” a city release stated.

“The city is asking for community input so that the program truly reflects our parks and neighborhoods."

The park ranger program will operate out of Tempe's Community Services Department.

Tempe had a park ranger program years ago, but it was discontinued during the Great Recession due to budget cuts.

Tempe is home to more than 50 neighborhood parks, community parks and preserves.

A first review of applicants will be Thursday, Aug. 3. Positions include park ranger, park ranger lead and park ranger supervisor.
