Tempe has closed Town Lake to boating activities due to increased water releases from reservoirs in northern Arizona.
The city made the announcement Thursday, March 23, saying it would be temporary and was made “out of an abundance of caution.”
Salt River Project’s water releases from Verde River reservoirs have increased the amount of debris such as tree branches to float downstream and into Tempe Town Lake, city officials said.
Paddle boating, kayaking, standup paddle boarding, rowing and sailing are affected by the decision. Parks surrounding the lake will remain open, and fishing is allowed.
The lake’s dam is operating normally and is handling the increase in water, officials said.
According to the city, staff will evaluate the lake daily and reopen it to activities when they can be resumed safely.
