City dedicates bikeway in memory of downtown Phoenix ambassador

INDEPENDENT NEWSMEDIA
A segment of Fillmore Street is now known as the Hans Hughes Memorial Bikeway.
The stretch between Central Avenue and 7th Street was dedicated this week during a ceremony that included Hughes’ family, Mayor Kate Gallego, representatives of Downtown Phoenix Inc. and others.
Hughes died in September 2021 from injuries sustained during a car-bicycle collision near 1st and Fillmore streets in August of that year.
The collision occurred as he rode his bike home from his job as a DPI downtown ambassador, a position he had for 12 years during which time he helped people find their way around the area, according to a city release.
“His radiant personality and baritone voice made him one of the most well-known, well-liked and recognizable ambassadors,” the release stated. “His family, friends and fellow ambassadors described him as the ‘downtown superhero.’”
The blue signs with white lettering are located along Fillmore Street facing east and west and are installed near the Central Avenue, 1st Street and 7th Street intersections.
Installation of the signs was approved by Phoenix City Council on Nov. 16.
In addition to the installation of the ceremonial signs, the Street Transportation Department removed parking and two traffic lanes along the section of Fillmore Street and added buffered and protected bike lanes on both sides of the roadway.
