Police: ‘No indication of foul play in Cuillo’s death’

About three months after bthe death of Scottsdale resident Robert “Bobby” Cuillo, who went missing from the Old Town entertainment area in July, Scottsdale Police are sharing new information.

Police officials say through a detailed investigation that there was no indication of foul play in Cuillo’s death.

Cuillo was reported missing July 17 after last being seen around 1 a.m. near Wasted Grain, 7295 E. Stetson Drive in Scottsdale.

Cuillo’s body was found the morning of July 19 in the canal near Scottsdale and Camelback Roads.

Since that time, SPD officials say they have worked with the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office to conduct investigations to piece together what happened to Cuillo.

The county medical examiner’s office, according to officials, ruled Cuillo’s death as an accidental drowning. The examiner’s report indicates Cuillo’s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit for a person to legally operate a motor vehicle.

According to police, Cuillo reportedly rented an electric scooter using his phone. Scottsdale Police were able to acquire the GPS and tracking information from the scooter.

Based on that evidence, officials say it appears Cuillo drove the scooter into the canal north of Chaparral Road.

The rented scooter was recovered from the canal where the GPS indicated it had entered.

“Scottsdale Police would like to remind the public to be very cautious when traveling along canals, waterways and when using wheeled conveyance devices if they choose to consumer alcohol, prescription or recreational drugs,” a police spokesman said in a press release.
