On Monday, the Avondale City Council adopted a budget of approximately $465 million for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

The budget becomes effective July 1.    

Council approved adding 13.5 new positions next year, including seven additional public safety positions to provide support to the city’s frontline police officers and firefighters. 

The budget also includes investment in the city’s infrastructure including:

• Remodeling of the police communication bureau;
• The relocation and reconstruction of the city’s detention center;
• Reconstruction of Fire Station No. 171 located in Old Town Avondale;
• Utility and street improvements in Old Town Avondale;
• Intersection improvements at Avondale Boulevard and Lower Buckeye Road;
• Design for the expansion of the Charles M. Wolf water reclamation facility;
• And sand volleyball courts at the BLVD, behind the Randall McDaniel Sports Complex.

The budget process for FY 2023-24 kicked off with the council budget retreat in December 2022, where the council outlined its priorities for the upcoming fiscal year.  

Multiple council work sessions on the budget were held in early spring, followed by the tentative adoption of the budget in May. The budget was formally adopted June 5.
