Armed suspects steal $170K coin collection from Phoenix home

A Phoenix homeowner is likely to see a physical return of their investment after they were previously robbed of nearly $170,000 worth of coins.

Phoenix police report Rolland Jeremy Davis, 27, was arrested Wednesday evening in connection with a home invasion that appears to have occurred Jan. 6.

Records state on Jan. 16 police had learned of a person who had a felony warrant for probation violation. However, they later learned the individual was listed as a possible suspect in an incident where three people entered a home and forced the owner at gunpoint to open a safe. The intruders then fled with a reported $170,000 coin collection.

The homeowner recognized one of the suspects as a friend of their son. Police used this to set up surveillance of Mr. Davis’ girlfriend. Officers found her in the area of 7th Avenue and Camelback Road, where they saw Mr. Davis enter his girlfriend’s vehicle.

Police waited to stop the vehicle until they reached a business area near 43rd and Dunlap avenues. Officers had noticed many traffic violations during the drive, including speeding and improper turns.

Officers identified Mr. Davis as the passenger and arrested him without incident. Police note that 67 parking spots from where they stopped the vehicle was a coin gallery shop.

An officer entered the shop thinking Mr. Davis may have been heading there to sell some of the stolen coins.

Apparently, he had already done so.

The owner recognized a photo of Mr. Davis and told the officer he had purchased $67,000 worth of coins from Mr. Davis the week before. Serial numbers provided by the coins owners checked out on some of the purchased coins.

Police found 44 collectible coins inside Mr. Davis’ backpack. Most of the coins are valued between $300 and $400 each, records state. Others were valued as high as $3,500.

Mr. Davis admitted to being present during the invasion in which a fake gun was used, he said. He then split the coins with two other suspects, who have yet to be found.

Mr. Davis was jailed in lieu of a $100,000 bond on charges of armed robbery, trafficking stolen property, kidnapping and burglary. He is due in court Jan. 24 and 28.

Police continue to investigate to find the remaining stolen coins.
