Arizona Rep. Debbie Lesko won't seek reelection

Posted

Arizona Rep. Debbie Lesko announced Tuesday she would not seek reelection in 2024.

The Republican who represents portions of the north and west Valley including Sun City, Sun City West, Peoria, Glendale and Phoenix, said via a statement she was stepping down to spend more time with her family.

"I want to spend more time with my husband, my 94-year-old mother, my three children, and my five grandchildren," she said.

Lesko has a long political history in the West Valley, having run for a seat on the Peoria Unified School District governing board before winning a seat in the Arizona House of Representatives where she served from 2009 through 2015. She then served in the Arizona Senate.

In 2018, she ran for the seat of former Rep. Trent Franks, who resigned after allegations of sexual harassment.

Lesko has won reelection twice in the reliably Republic district, having no opponent in 2022.

In the statement, Lesko said the increasing time away from her family was difficult and she wished to be closer to home.
