Arizona governor, AG, DPS director tell weekend protesters to do so peacefully

Posted

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, Attorney General Kris Mayes and Department of Public Safety Director Jeffrey Glover released statements Friday on protests planned in Arizona this weekend, encouraging those involved to remain peaceful.

“Arizonans have a right to peaceful assembly and protest, and I am fully committed to defending that right,” Hobbs said.

“However, that right does not extend to damaging property, committing violence or rioting. Violence of any kind will not be tolerated.”

Hobbs said Arizona is coordinating with local law enforcement and will be prepared to deploy resources as needed to ensure “our communities remain safe, orderly and free from violence.”

Protests over federal immigration enforcement raids have been flaring up around the country as officials in cities large and small prepare for major demonstrations this weekend against President Donald Trump.

Although many demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been peaceful, others have led to clashes with police and hundreds of protesters have been arrested.

Col. Jeffrey Glover, who directs the Arizona Department of Public Safety, said his agency “supports the right to peacefully protest.

“As potential demonstrations approach, we remind everyone: protest peacefully, respect property and obey the law. Our role is to protect both public safety and constitutional rights."

Mayes said “let me be clear: there is no place for violence, destruction of property or threats to public safety in our communities.

"Public safety can and must be maintained lawfully, with respect for the civil liberties enshrined in our Constitution. I have full confidence that Arizona’s state and local law enforcement agencies are prepared to ensure tomorrow’s demonstrations remain safe – and that every Arizonans' right to peacefully assemble is protected."
