Arizona Bike Week cruises into Scottsdale with a focus on safety

Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowsky has officially proclaimed April as “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month” in honor of the Arizona Bike Week festival returning to WestWorld of Scottsdale April 2-6.

As bikers gather for the five-day festival featuring concerts, vendors and group rides, event organizers, city leaders and the Scottsdale Police Department are taking the opportunity to promote motorcycle safety, according to a press release.

Scottsdale Police are actively engaging with the biking community to spread awareness of Arizona’s motorcycle laws and best practices for road safety.

One key focus is Arizona’s lane filtering law, which allows motorcyclists to move between stopped vehicles in certain conditions. Lane filtering is legal only when traffic is at a complete stop on roads with at least two lanes in the same direction and a posted speed limit of 45 mph or less, and motorcyclists may not exceed 15 mph while doing so. Scottsdale Police are reminding riders to use caution and ensure they comply with the law to prevent accidents.

Additionally, the department is reinforcing the “Look Twice, Save a Life” message aimed at all motorists. With an increased number of motorcycles on the road, drivers are urged to check their blind spots, use extra caution when changing lanes and maintain a safe following distance.
