The city of Apache Junction’s off-leash dog park at 247 E. Superstition Blvd. will be closed for maintenance April 10-May 15 to in part address drainage and standing water issues.
The 2.6-acre Dutchman Dog Park, which opened in April 2022, cost more than $1.1 million to construct at the northwest corner of the Pinal County complex.
Work to be done during the closure, according to the city of Apache Junction, includes:
modifications to improve the drainage/standing water issues in the Mesquite area of the park by installing dry wells and French drains to reduce closure days after heavy rains;
improvements to the turf in all areas during spring transition by aerating, top dressing and overseeding with Bermuda grass to fill in multiple bare area; and.
other improvements best done while the park is closed, such as clean the spill way of mud and debris, tree trimming, planting trees on the west side, applying pre-emergent herbicide to the granite areas and potentially installing additional seating.
The drainage improvements take about a week to install and Bermuda grass takes about three weeks to fully germinate. The additional time allows the city to perform all the other improvement items listed above and ensure enough time for potential setbacks.
