AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Madison Booker scored 24 points as part of a strong all-around performance, helping No. 6 Texas open its season with an 85-65 victory against Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday night.

Booker, a two-time AP first-team All-American, began her senior season with seven rebounds, five steals and five assists.

Center Breya Cunningham, also a senior, had 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Reese Downey scored 17 points to lead Fairleigh Dickinson, the two-time defending Northeast Conference champion. The Knights were 10-for-20 from 3-point range. Downey went 5 for 11.

Fairleigh Dickinson outshot Texas overall 48% to 45.3, but committed 18 turnovers. Texas turned them into 22 points.

Texas suffered a significant loss of talent from a team that reached the NCAA Final Four for the second straight season. Point guard Rori Harmon, the Longhorns' best perimeter defender, currently plays professionally in Turkey.

Guards Jordan Lee and Aaliyah Crump transferred to South Carolina and Duke. Forward Justice Carlton left for Houston. Center Kyla Oldacre, who shared the position with Cunningham, was a senior last season. Coach Vic Schaefer did not find a replacement with size and experience.

Schaefer does have a five-player freshman class ranked No. 3 by ESPN, along with guards Zya Vann and Jayda Clark, who came to Texas from Oklahoma and Australia, respectively.

The 6-foot-4 Cunningham averaged 19 minutes, 7.7 points and 5.6 rebounds a game last season. Schaefer expects more from her. She played 29 minutes against Fairleigh Dickinson, using a four-inch height advantage to convert 8 of 14 from the field. Cunningham had 13 points and nine rebounds by halftime, when Texas led 44-27.

Cunningham's freshman backup, 6-2 Isi Etute, produced nine points and five rebounds in 23 minutes at center and forward.
