3 teen girls die in Mesa crash
Police say speed and weather were factors

INDEPENDENT NEWSMEDIA
Three teenage girls died Wednesday night and a fourth was injured in a single-car accident near Ellsworth and Guadalupe roads in Mesa, police said.
The crash occurred about 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, and “it appears that both speed and the weather were the primary causes,” police said in a release.
Officers said a blue Mustang with four people inside appears to have been traveling eastbound on Guadalupe Road and switched lanes to the curb lane when the driver lost control.
“The Mustang hit the curb, went over the curb into the landscape, then hit a boulder causing it to roll over and plow into a light pole before coming to a stop,” police said.
There were four girls in the car, ages 14 to 17. All four were trapped in the Mustang.
The driver and front passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. The passengers in the back seat were extricated from the vehicle and taken to a hospital where one of them died. The other passenger in the back survived with minor injuries, police said.
“This tragic loss of life serves is a reminder to the community that certain driving behaviors are almost always contributing factors of fatal and serious injury collisions,” the release stated.
Mesa police officials said the department is working to reduce the number of fatal collisions through Operation Safer Streets, a selective enforcement program running through the end of April.
“This program focuses on driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, unsafe vehicle operations, and pedestrian violations,” the release state. “We encourage the public to obey all traffic laws, focus on their driving, and not drive impaired.”
