Health care cyberattacks on the rise, experts advise added supports

Hackers remain a problem for all industries that rely on computer systems, but health care providers are particularly at risk based on the latest trends, with experts warning clinics and hospitals — including those in the Valley and Arizona — of the best ways to protect themselves.

The health care and public health sector was the most targeted by ransomware attackers in 2023, ahead of services like transportation and energy, according to a recent FBI report.

Cybercriminals not only threaten patient safety and data, but they also can affect hospital operations as seen with the cyberattack on UnitedHealth Group’s Change Healthcare in February, which disrupted the operations of health care systems nationwide including in Arizona where UnitedHealthcare has more than 1.8 million members.
