A few weeks ago we started working on a simple video for Connecting Scottsdale North about garage doors. The idea was straightforward. Sit down with a trusted local expert and talk about what wears out, what can be repaired, and what homeowners should know before a small problem becomes a big one.
We used a new listing we have coming up, and while we were filming, I noticed a small crinkle in the front of a garage door. I’d seen it before but never thought much about it. I asked what causes something like that and whether it was something to worry about. The answer was that it could be a sign the door was under more strain than it should be and that, left alone long enough, it could eventually fail.
For some reason that little crinkle stuck with me.
Not because of the garage door.
Because it made me realize something about Scottsdale North.
Over the last few years I’ve written about home inspections, sewer lines, roofs, air conditioners, windows, electrical panels and now garage doors. I’d always thought they were separate stories. They aren’t.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized they’re all part of what happens when a neighborhood matures. Scottsdale North is entering a new stage of life. And homes at this stage tend to face many of the same questions.
Most of the homes in Scottsdale North are now twenty to thirty years old. When many of these communities were built, they were the new homes on the edge of town. Today they’re established neighborhoods with mature trees, longtime friendships, grown families and a lot of memories. It shouldn’t surprise us that the homes themselves are entering a new stage of life too.
Many of these homes were purchased when the communities themselves were new. Since then they’ve seen countless sunsets, holiday visits from family, rounds of golf, walks with friends, and the routines that eventually turn a house into a home. The homes have quietly been there through all of it.
Perhaps that’s why these little signs are so easy to overlook. We don’t think much about our garage door, air conditioner, windows or roof because they’ve faithfully done their jobs for years. Until one day something catches our attention and reminds us that even dependable systems eventually need a little attention.
The garage door gets a little noisier. The air conditioner doesn’t cool quite like it used to. You start noticing fog between the panes of a window. You notice a spot on your ceiling after a rain and you realize the roof may be telling you something. Most of the time the issue isn’t the warning itself. It’s that we don’t recognize it for what it is.
We’re introducing our neighbors to trusted local experts and helping homeowners understand which issues deserve attention, which can wait, and what options they have before a small problem becomes a big one.
Garage doors happened to be first. Over the coming months we’ll tackle other systems homeowners depend on every day through a new series we’re calling Common Problems. Trusted Experts.
If your garage door has a little crinkle in the front, is making more noise than it used to, or is just showing its age, our first Common Problems. Trusted Experts. The episode is now available at ConnectingScottsdaleNorth.com. I think you’ll find it helpful.
