Scottsdale’s Royse Contemporary presents: 'Contrails and Peripheries,' Feb.18-March 21

Royse Contemporary will present the solo exhibition of Charmagne Vasquez Coe, “Contrails and Peripheries,” which is titled after a large work completed in 2020.

“Contrails and Peripheries” will open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m.,Thursday, Feb.18, coinciding with the Scottsdale ArtWalk, with an opportunity to meet the artist and curato, according to a press release.

The exhibition — open to the public 6-9pm, Thursday; and 12-4 p.m., Saturday; or by private appointment — will be on display through March 21 at Royse Contemporary, 7077 E. Main St., Suite 6 in the Scottsdale Arts District.

The theme reflects on the state of being present, while acknowledging the past, and seeing glimpses of future, the release said, detailing the artist’s works made in live time of instability, despair, solitude, upheaval, reawakenings, planning, transition, new love, relocating among her many experiences.

“Contrails and Peripheries” is described as a passionate and poignant exhibition featuring emotion and imagery within the pieces, stated owner/curator, Nicole Royse, calling the works “relevant in our current turbulent times.”

Ms. Vasquez Coe, the release said, often creates works in her home studio or en plein air, with her recent direction of art focusing on assemblage and abstract surrealism across many media while weaving two and three-dimensional narratives, including characters and other identifiable subjects.

Ephemera from her home, travels and nature are enmeshed and pushing out from the canvas surface. The exhibition showcases an emotive and vibrant new collection that highlights the artist’s direct responding with everyday life happenings, according to the release.

“Be it living during this complex era of political turmoil and COVID-19, a pheasant who took refuge in my yard or appreciating experiences with my loved ones in this city,” said Ms. Vasquez Coe in a prepared statement, adding “these are my painted words, painted breaths, painted determination. I wish to keep creating with what is right now.”

A native Arizonan artist, who grew up in mid-town Phoenix in a family of creatives who taught her many art forms, Ms. Vasquez Coe earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a minor in art from Northern Arizona University.

Her paintings and drawings have been exhibited locally and abroad, noted the release, detailing Ms. Vasquez Coe’s work represented by Royse Contemporary. She regularly participates in the downtown Phoenix art community and is involved in several art organizations, added the release.
