Royse Contemporary traverses the new art season and welcomes fall with “Lens Versus Brush,” an exhibition highlighting a group of artists working in painting, photography or both.

From painting, to photography, and mixed media, people have expressed favoritism for a particular art form throughout history. Noting a quote by renowned writer/activist, Susan Sontag, who stated, “The Painter Constructs, the Photographer Discloses,” the question of black and white is presented.

A topic, which has been debated at length in essays, panels, competitions and many exhibitions, with artists, academics and collectors has various stances, according to a press release.

Royse has selected a collection of artworks for “Lens Versus Brush,” aiming to create a dialogue, fueling consideration to compare, contrast, and question these ideals and preferences. An assortment of original paintings, photography and mixed media artworks have been accumulated from artists creating here in Arizona.

The exhibition features work from artists: James Angel, Cam DeCaussin, Cherie Buck-Hutchison, Peter Brian Klein, Marilyn Szabo, Daniel Shepherd, Casey Wakefield, and special guest artist JB Snyder.

“I believe each artist brings their own voice, story and style to each work of art created,” said Nicole Royse, in a prepared statement.

No matter what form the artist has chosen to express creativity, all art forms are said to be important in its own right. Art is more than just its forms, but the importance of the artist.

“In my view, photography and painting really share one history. The influences that work on one, work on the other,” said Jack Welpott, internationally-known photographer and educator.

The “Lens Versus Brush” exhibit will open to the public on Thursday, Oct. 13, coinciding with the Scottsdale Artwalk. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. with an opportunity to meet the artists and curator. This exhibition will be on display through Nov. 27.

Located in the Scottsdale Arts District, Royse Contemporary is in the Marshall Square complex at 7077 E. Main St., Suite 6, in Scottsdale. Open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Tuesdays, 6-9 p.m., Thursdays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Fridays; and 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturdays and/or by appointment.
