$23M expansion of Queen Creek’s fleet facility set to start soon

Posted

Construction on the town’s $23 million fleet maintenance facility expansion is expected to start in October.

At its Sept. 16 meeting, the Queen Creek Town Council unanimously voted to authorize and direct the town manager and capital improvement projects department director to take the actions necessary to begin the expansion located generally at 220th Street and Park Drive south of Ryan Road.

The resolution was on the council’s consent agenda in which all items are handled through one motion and vote.

The expansion will include a new, approximately 24,500-square-foot building and associated equipment and infrastructure. Construction is expected to begin in October, with completion set for November 2027.

“This facility, to be supported by the existing fleet shop, will be designed to accommodate the rapid expansion of the town’s vehicle fleet, due significantly to the town’s police department,” according to a staff report. “The design of the new facility will include (a) provision for a future expansion beyond this current planned phase, expected to be required as the vehicle fleet further increases.”

The expansion will allow for the current facility to eventually be decommissioned. The project is part of the fiscal year 2026-27 capital improvement program.

“Since this facility will provide vehicle maintenance for town-owned vehicles across several departments, construction costs for the project will be funded through multiple funding sources that include police development fees, construction sales tax, debt service, water operating funds, wastewater operating funds, as well as proceeds from the 2024 and 2027 excise tax bond issuances,” the report continued.

In September 2023, the council approved a $300,000 contract with Arrington Watkins Architects for a space needs analysis across town departments, “and the fleet maintenance facility expansion was identified as one of the priority development projects,” the report stated.

In April 2024, the council approved a contract with Arrington Watkins for the design services related to the expansion in an amount not to exceed $1.9 million.

In August 2024, council approved a $307,341 pre-construction services contract with Chasse Building for the expansion.
