A new exhibition bringing together Mexican and Chicano perspectives will open this fall at Olney Gallery at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Phoenix.
“Tierra y Vida” features artists Mónica Gisel and Martín Moreno, whose work explores connections to culture, family, identity and the land. Gisel, a Mexican-born artist and educator of Zapotec descent, works in painting and printmaking, addressing themes including spirituality, migration, ancestral memory and identity. Her work also extends into community arts, illustration and writing.
Moreno’s work draws from labor, oral traditions, family and people’s relationship with the land. A longtime figure in the Chicano Art Movement, he has exhibited widely and has also worked in arts education. Moreno received the Arizona Governor's Arts Award in 2011 for his contributions to arts and education.
